Food for the Hungry (FH) Peru follows FH's global mission to respond to God's call to end physical and spiritual hungers. Those of you who have followed our journey in Bolivia and the Dominican Republic have seen some ways FH has tried to fulfill this mission in those contexts. Here in Peru Ryan overseas FH's work in 32 communities in three different regions. We work in 18 shanty towns surrounding the capital of Lima, 11 shanty communities around the jungle town of Pucallpa, and three poor communities that were devastated by an earthquake last year in the coastal area of Chincha.
FH/Peru currently runs three programs in seeking to fulfill its mission:
- child development
- health and nutrition
- family action
These programs respond to the communities' needs of deficient educational opportunities, high rates of malnutrition and disease, and significant levels of domestic violence. In all of these programs FH/Peru works as a facilitator of community development; seeking to train, equip and support local churches, leaders and families to meet their community's long-term needs rather than intervening for them.
