On July 28th Peru will inaugurate its new president, Ollanta Humala, the winner of the second round of elections last Sunday over rival Keiko Fujimori. It was a controversial election choosing between two populists - one representing the far left (Ollanta) and one the far right (Keiko), what one Peruvian intellectual referred to as choosing between AIDS and cancer. The results were close, 51% to 48%, but the process was clean and free of serious incidents. The voice of the pueblo Peruano spoke through the vote, seeming to say that the economic growth experienced by some in the country over the past several years needs to reach more than the upper classes of Lima. Let's hope that they are right!!!
